Krissy is currently a PhD candidate in Medical Neuroscience at St. Joseph’s Hospital, McMaster University Healthcare, in Hamilton, Ontario.
Krissy completed her first degree in 2004, an Honours Bachelor of Arts, in Behavioural Neuroscience – Psychology at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, which afforded her a solid foundation to embark upon a Master of Science degree in Medical Neuroscience at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, Alberta. After graduating in 2006, Krissy immediately began work on her doctorate at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, in the field of Autism, investigating multisensory processing and learning mechanisms in this special population. She is working towards completing her PhD studies by the year 2010.
At the age of 27, Krissy has already been the recipient of numerous national scholarships, awards and distinctions for her top performance and achievements in research, academics and leadership. Her ground-breaking research has afforded her the opportunity to contribute publishable knowledge to the medical and scientific community at large about the effects of new surgical procedures for movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and the cognitive development of individuals with autism and typically developing individuals. This has also awarded her the opportunity to present her findings at a number of international conferences across North America and Europe to date.
Within her university community Krissy has been acknowledged for her outstanding leadership contributions to McMaster University as student representative, vice president and president of the student-elected body, representing her constituents to university administration on a number of pivotal issues in the history of the university.
Krissy has also been an active member of her community for over a decade, holding a number of executive positions in local boys and girls clubs, community outreach initiative programs and benefit events across the city. Her life has been fashioned by a saying she holds dear: “The future belongs to those that believe in the beauty of their dreams” Eleanor Roosevelt. Krissy’s dream is to eventually bridge her training in Psychology and Neuroscience with her passion for education and the underprivileged, to establish special interest schools across Canada that maximizes the potential of every learner through an emphasis in self-discipline, respect, and individualized attention.
Krissy presently resides in Milton, Ontario, with her husband Kwesi Thomas, a Finance Manager at Research In Motion (Blackberry). They are expecting their first child in December 2008.
