Court Intervention & Restorative Justice

Acorn to Oak Restorative Justice Program was created to ensure the restoration, re-integration and rehabilitation of all youth who have been in trouble with the law. Through education and professional support, the program’s mission is to meet the emotional, physical, mental and psychological needs of the individuals who are offenders of the law or victims of crime.

A comprehensive approach helps troubled youth accept responsibility for their actions while helping them to become contributing members of their communities. The participant can take part in programs appropriate to their assessed needs, such as anger management, anti-violence programs, life skills, counselling, peer relationships and employment readiness.

There are four main offerings
  1. Children’s intervention – which provides therapeutic counselling services for children 6 – 12 who are caught committing a crime or who display anti-social behaviour. Counselling includes individual, family and group sessions. The purpose of this program is early intervention.
  2. Court intervention program – geared towards breaking the pattern of violent crime working closely with the criminal justice system and community partners. It’s a comprehensive network of services offered to youth and young people who come in conflict with the law. The program focuses on restoration, rehabilitation and reintegration.
  3. After prison care support – assists released offenders as part of their probation order to understand and take responsibility for their actions as well as work with them to become contributing members of the community.
  4. Victim offender mediation – this support program facilitates a consenting face to face meeting in the presence of a trained mediator between the victim and the offender. The goal of these session(s) is to create a mutually agreeable plan to emotionally repair any damages that occurred as a result of the crime as well as provides the victims with a sense of closure.
Treatment services are integrated into a full range of rehabilitive programs such as mentorship, counselling, education, life skills support, employment, recreation and spiritual care. This holistic approach aims at providing complete restoration of the individual.
